the real me

This is probably silly of me...
I was just thinking about my journal and the online friends that I have and it struck me... Most of you, I have no idea what you look like! It is strange, how the internet works, how we make close relationships, where we can talk about our interests in common and life in general, and yet we have no face to put to this other person on the other end. What does it do to our relationships? Are we more open with the faceless? With no fear of recognizing this other person in the real world, I can see how that might be true. Are we afraid that we will have to change our labels of people once we have a face? That they might not be the image of who we imagined them to be? I don't know.
And then I wondered if you wondered what I looked like too.. So, silly me, I posted a few pics on the web for your viewing pleasure. I'm making this a friends' only entry, hopefully to keep out the weirdo stalkers... Both of the pics are now a few years old. I have a bad habit of never finishing a roll of film. I wear contacts more now and less makeup...

-- My best friend was getting married, and I was feeling left out (yeah, the whole thing was hard on me) so the two of us went out and took "pseudo-engagement" photos of the two of us. to celebrate the event and our friendship. Blame the fuzzy pic on her fiancé.. he took them
Jules
-- Um, yeah. Not the most flattering pic of me, but it's not like this is a dating thing or anything. It makes me laugh.
And if any of you are brave or willing, I'd love to see what you look like too... You can send pics directly to me at jcd1013@dsdf.org. I promise I won't use them as blackmail. :)

Date: 2004-01-24 05:08 am (UTC)You look very nice though. I'm kind of like you; if I have film I don't develop it right away; I'll probably leave some of mine sitting until chemical photography becomes extinct.

Date: 2004-01-24 08:39 am (UTC)I'm so bad about it... I have one film in my camera that has been there for four years now--I'm not even sure if I dare develop it. Summer vacation--not last year, but the year before, still on my desk. Okay, that's what I'm doing tomorrow, just turning in my film. :)

Date: 2004-01-24 08:56 am (UTC)Yep, I found you, just an adorable shot of you with Morgan asleep on your chest. Since I was rather starting to identify you by your icon, you weren't anything like I had pictured. :) It's great to have a face now. And your baby is absolutely beautiful.

Date: 2004-01-24 06:18 am (UTC)I totally agree with you in regards to the whole "mystery of the unknown" thing though. I've often wondered what my internet buddies look like. I mean, I always form an idea of what I think they look like, and the few times I've seen pictures, I've been wrong. Hehe! I met one of my best friends through the internet... for a long time when we first started talking, I pictured her with brown hair. Turned out she was blonde. When I finally saw her picture though, she looked exactly like she should have. Not necessarily how I pictured... but she just looked right -- she fit her personality.
Anyway, I'll stop posting babbling responses to your LJs now. But I just wanted to let you know that I'm gonna post a few links to pix of myself over in my LJ. Feel free to check them out! :) Maybe it'll curb your curiosity. ~Becka

Date: 2004-01-24 09:08 am (UTC)I'm the only redhead in my family, although I've got several cousins, so the trait is strong in my genes, thankfully. Inside joke that I want to have redheaded children, so I have to screen all of my potential beaus (isn't that a great word?) and their family history. It's the reason that I'm not married. (VBG).
One of my best internet friends told me that she was short. I'm about 5'3, so I thought I understood, until I actually met her in person and she was about 4'10... Really short! But it so fits her now, I just had a moment of my virtual world tilting on its axis. That's kinda why I thought this would be fun. :) And I'm enjoying it.
Curb my curiousity? I was thinking more like "satisfy!" Thanks!

Date: 2004-01-24 05:26 pm (UTC)Wow. 4'10" is short. I'm 5'6". Not too short, not too tall.
Oh, and if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? You look sooo young in those pictures.

Date: 2004-01-24 09:21 am (UTC)I'll try to find a picture of me - they are very scarce. I'm usually the one behind the camera, never in front. If you want to see someone disappear quickly, just point a camera at me. I hate having my picture taken.

Date: 2004-01-24 05:40 pm (UTC)Here I've started associating people with their icons, so you I start seeing as a more feminine looking Elijah--longer hair, maybe a wider smile... Weird, huh? I don't know if you'll take that as a compliment or not. :)
